Does anyone here keep Darters, if so what species

I have a Johnny Darter, and I have kept Iowa Darters in the past. Darters are one of my favorite native fish.

I love em just got a few from a friend in Tennessee, they are sooo interesting, now im gonna set up a 55 darter tank, and stock as many as i can beg, borrow or catch, only one or 2 of each kind.

At the hatchery I worked at, we kept greensides, Johnnys, rainbows, and orangethroats in a couple displays. Most were caught and held temporarily before we delivered them to the freshwater mussel research center at the Columbus Zoo

Just for my info. What were mussell research folks doin with Darters ??

I was wondering what was the fish that came in with my crappie minnos. I have one of these darters in my feeder minno tank, a 55. I want to keep it. How do I care for it? I usually feed my minnos granuals then feed them to my dats, rays, and eels. Do I do anything special for the darter? I will take a pic as soon as I can get rid of some minnos and put my darter in another tank. Any advice? Suggestions?

What i did was maybe a little involved for you but i just bought a 15 gal breeder tank, used fine gravel and stones on the botton a couple of large stones, they like to perch like little birds. Next i added a small power head with venturi air attachment, to create heavy circulation and bubbles, like in a creek, they like the riffles. Thats it, they like bloodworms , frozen or freeze dried. they are really worth the trouble iMO

They deal with pretty much any native species they can get a hold of. In their larval stages, the mussels hitch rides in the gill filaments of fish. Different mussels pick different species of fish. They introduce mussel larvae to a lot of fish species and see which ones they take to. They then take fish, load them up with endangered mussel larvae and stock them in waters where the mussels live to help bolster numbers
