i have a few questions about dats:
what is the smallest hardiest species?
What size tank for 2 or 3 of these?(maybe a poly too)
what do they eat?
to they prefer specific water parameters?

Smallest of the species will be AT or NTT (Both grow about a foot). AT and IT are by far the most hardy while NTT is the weakest. Dats grow slow and usually average about a inch per year but many people who get them on pellets and other food have faster growth rates. I would recommend at least a 120g w or a 180g. They usually eat feeders and live food but can be trained to take sinking/floating pellets and frozen or freeze dried foods. ST, IT, NGT, NTT will do fine in neutral ph while AT will do better in slightly more alkaline water as its deemed a brackish dat.

Something at least 2 feet wide. 120g wide (48"x24"x24"). Remember that if you buy just a few there will be a lot of aggression. Give lots of hiding places and different territories.

that pretty much covers it in my opinion
