New to the dats, my lfs has 5 widebars for $40.00 each. They have been there for two days. Took a look today, is it normal that they would be kinda laying down to the side with not much color? Guy at the store said they take a while to adjust?

What should I be looking at besides itch, cloudy eyes etc..

I doubt they are true widebars at $40 but typically if they are small, they will be blackish (unstable), try and hide a lot if there isnt any decor in the tank they they will try and hide in a corner or even try and lay flat.

so if they dont have any signs of ich and their fins are in good shape (not torn up) then I would go for it...

yeah at that price, they are most likely IT's. You wont get a widebar for that price. As for behavior and coloration, thats pretty normal with dats that living in pet store conditions. Their color will stabilize and will start to swim around shortly after getting them home...

Ok. Thanks for the replys, I'm going after work to check out again. Can't remember but seems like they had two bars on the body. Maybe NTT's or ST's? Don't IT's have 3 bars on body. Definitely not NGT or AT's

Well its hard to say, but IT's are what are commonly sold at fish stores. If they were true ST's the price would be about 8x that much. How big were they? Best way to tell would be with pics. These charts are a good starting point to help you determine what it is. I'd look at tail pattern, then body stripe(s), and body shape.

I have 2 IT's that have the 2 bars like a ST but are actually IT's

3 bar IT's are always mistaken for ST's..like the others said..you won't find ST's for 40$.

i'd buy them anyway though..a dats a dat..

Well must have got lucky with the Dat purchase. Bought three at $40 each. Two of the three are ST's they look exactly like the pics posted here in the thread. The other one looks to be IT.

Thanks to all for the info.

Bought three Dats, two of the three look like STs. The third looks like a IT. Might all be IT's but they all look heathy. Invoice from fish dealer had them listed as gold tiger datnoids.

Thanks for the info.
