im new to aquariums and just bought 2 small dats. one of the dats i was looking at has blue pupils and the other just plain black eye balls. did i get a bad fish? most of the time their colors are dark brown and they only light up when they eat or get aggressive. to compare the 2 dats i have pics.

i didnt really check him out all that much. he is a real health fish eats pellets and dry krills. bought him from Tong's in Fountain valley before i knew there was a site like this existed.

I have read many reports from Dat owners who are concerned about cloudy or bluish eyes on their fish. I can tell you that if the fish is absolutely perpendicular to you, the pupils will appear black. If the fish is on an angle to you and depending upon the angle of illumination through the lens of the eye, the eyes will always appear somewhat cloudy and bluish. Sometimes the level of cloudiness and bluishness is slight and sometimes it appears more substantial. This is completely normal. It is difficult to tell from your pictures, but given this, I wouldn't necessarilly be concerned. Examine your fish in a completely perpendicular orientation. If the pupils appear black (more or less), then it's probably ok.

thanks brian your post was most informing. i will keep watching her and see how she turns out as she grows bigger. i have just never seen that in a fish before, the eyes are not cloudy. you can really see the bright blue pupil, the dot in the center of the eye, even when its under the driftwood. the picture is horrible i know haha. im buddhist and was thinking maybe its a reincarntion of a soul haha ya i know a long shot there.

the bigger the fish the bluer the eyes look all my dats have it just the really small ones it is hard to tell...
