Hey,
right now my lfs is selling D.polota for 10 Euro/fish.
As much as I know D.polota won´t grow bigger than 30cm (20-25 in common) but I don´t know if it´s true or not.
At the moment I´ve got a 120g tank (150cmx50cmx60cm) with 3,1 ´Geophagus´pellegrini (can´t finde any females...), 1,2 Metynnis altidorsalis, 1 Cochliodon basilisko and 3 Pimelodus pictus.
So it´s a very "calm" tank. The ´Geophagus´ show some aggression towards each others but not towards other fish.
The Dats are 3-4cm in length so I´d have to keep them in a smaller tank (got an empty 30g and 5ßg tank) till they´d reach about 7cm.
But the question is if keeping a Polota in this tank would be even possible.
In Germany it´s pretty hard to find someone who really knows how to keep Datnioides because they are very rare.

Hey,
yeah he´s definately selling Polotas!
But the information on the internet is kind of confusing.. I still can´t figure out if they are brackish water or in freshwater.
I could keep a Microlepis as well for several years but I´m not a fan of "temporary keeping".
Also Nandus nandus would be a great alternative to Dats but I don´t know where to buy them.

They can be kept in fresh water
The datnoides with the weakest immune system though.
