First off, I would like to say hi to everyone as this is my first post as a new member. Please bare with me as I am brand new. I am open to all and any suggestions as I think it is important to learn from those who have experience. So here it goes:

I have a 100 gallon tank that has been set up for a couple of months now. I have a 4.5 in tiger oscar, a 3 in Jaguar Cichlid, five 2in long tailed ruby barbs, and a 1.5 in Indonesian datnoid. When I got the Datnoid (affectionately named Nelson by my girlfriend) I was returning a rowdy green terror. At the time, I didn't think of the datnoid growing slow and the oscar much faster, and that eventually the oscar would be big enough to possibly eat the Dat. My gut tells me to either get rid of the Jag and the Oscar (which would leave a very empty 100 gallon) or get ride of the datnoid (which I am extremely attached to). All suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciate it, and I am excited to be a new member of this community :).

You have to do what you feel is right. Eventually, the Datnoid could become food. They are very slow growers but if you can get it eating pellets, they can grow pretty quickly to about 4" and he won't get eaten. That's a tough situation. If it were me, i'd keep the datnoid.

Me too!

Thank you guys, hes a great fish with tons of personality. He has that heir of underdog going for him to being surrounded by the larger fish. Although I gotta say he never hides away and is always out and in the mix during feeding time. I've tried hard to get him on pellets and he won't bite, even when the other fish are going crazy over it. Im feeding him frozen blood worms as well as freeze dried krill, once daily.

It's good that he's no hider as a lot of dats tend to be.If he does not get bullied by the others he should do well. What's his stripe pattern like?...Most times it is pretty difficult to get dats onto pellets so it will take you some time...maybe a month or a little longer of starving and watching the others eat pellets before he gives in...Good thing he is at least eating FD krill, just don't give in and give him any live feeders.

I have been staying away from live feeders as I know they are not healthy for the fish. He changes colors from stable to unstable all the time. Id say about 50 \ 50. I noticed he stays striped (stable) when he's eating and right after he eats

Post a photo if you can.

If your feeding Krill then only feed it krill. After a month of that start mixing in Food Stick pellet as they are similar size and floats. Your datnoid should develop a habit to eating floating Food and will hit Floating pellets, if it take pellets cut off krill if not just keep offering pellet only. If it gets sunken belly Ill feed krill again and start over. This has been my method for Baby datnoids for my 5 different batchs of datnoids and has worked for all of them

Sounds like a good strategy.
