I had a widebar dat die a month ago and i had no idea what was going on since ive never seen it before. I assumed it was because i was on vacation for a week and roomates left some pieces of shrimp sitting at the bottom of the tank for a few days. But this is how i would describe it:

The fish would become darker (usually a sign of stress). It would just kinda swim or float midlevel in the water in the same spot for hours and even days. I noticed some kind of white kind of stuff coming off of his skin, but it didnt look like parasites, worms, or ich or anything common like that. I took him out of the tank to avoid the other fish from bein affected, and the next day, his eyes turned white. Almost like a SEVERE ammonium burn but it was like how the fish eyes turn white when u cook a fish, thats how it looked. After i moved it into another tank, i proceeded with adding some fungus treatment, but he died within 24 hours.

I thought i wouldnt have to worry about it again, but i have one guy (out of my 8 dats) that is having the same symptoms. So i put him in an isolation tank and am adding the same treatment. The whiteness in one of his eyes has gone away, and his skin/scales look better. But he is still not eatting and is swimming funny. At least there is improvement, but am worried about him.

Has anyone else ever experienced these kind of symptoms in their widebars? Were you able to treat them? Let me know. Thanks.

Are his fins ragged? I've lost a couple, while all the others seemed fine, to something simlilar to what youve described. How big are these guys? the ones I lost were small about 3 inches at most. I do not beleive it is the datnoid disease though. Maybe a water quality/immune system issue.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Fins are perfect, hes just dark and his side looks different than the rest, like it has a whitish coat of slime on him. But that coat has gone away since treating it. I hope he turns out fine. One eye is still white. Anyone recommend any good nutritious foods to try to feed them? all mine eat market shrimp, maybe i should dip it in the seachem i have.

Some people might not agree with this, but its what id do if needed. If hes not eating at all, get feeder fish. They might trigger the feeding responce. Once hes eating, back to health and everything else is worked out you can get him off them again. But when i lost mine i tryed and tryed to get them to eat their frozen foods hoping theyd come around and they never did eat, now i wish id tryed feeders.

I do have a few feeder convicts around that i could drop in, ill give that a try. thanks.

did you check the water parameters after your friend left the leftover shrimp in the tank??? maybe the ammonia level was high?? did you do a water change after you took out the first infected one???

i hope the other one make it through...

Yah ive done many 25%-40% water changes. he seems to be getting better at least....the way he physically looks. He probably is still a lil devastated tho.
