I have made the plunge and picked up 3 young D Microlepis, they are about 5 cm and have settled in well and are happily eating bloodworms, prawn and earthworm. I was hoping to add something that might help tidy up what they miss and hopefully help with their confidence but am worried that I add something that will out compete them. Any suggestions? Could be something temporary till they grow a bit and move to a larger tank. Or am I better just leaving them on their own?

First of all good for you for getting them to eat foods other than feeder fish at a young age....and welcome to MFK and to Datdom. You could probably get a pim catfish to clean up but I'm not sure if it would overwelm the dats at feeding time though.

More Dats I think will happen, totally sold on these guys. Have kept a fair few different fish over the years but been a long time since something has won me over so much. Love the way they line up and change colour at their feeding times. Don't want to get into the whole feeding debate (Thanks for welcome by the way :)) but had no intentions of using feeder unless really had too. In the event they changed over surprisingly easily with a bit of effort and a little current. Pims had crossed my mind but like you a bit worried they are too fast.

Just wondering about my water and if it's too soft its about 6.5! The slightly larger of the two which is now 'stable' most of the time seems to have fraid pectoral fins, no idea why but wonder if might be water, everything else seems ok or any other ideas? No sign of any fungus. On the subject of being stable, although this one is the slightly large it is not the dominate one at feeding times, had just assumed it would be the dominant one that would go stable first or it that not how they work?

It could have frayed fins from fighting witht the other one. I know when I had only two I was dealing with fin damge all the time

thanks for thoughts, is weird. He is now looking great while others are 'browner' but have feeling all is not well with him. Getting mixed messages about how hard water should be so bit confused. Got a couple of hoplosternum thoractum to clean up which seems to be working well, would have gone for woodcats but looked up wrong ones and found big fish
