The Real Norcal
I just recently (yesterday) got an ST and honestly I am not real happy with it (at the moment).

first thing is it is a dirty brown color which has gotten worse since he's been in the tank.I understand this might go away but the fact that it only "might" go away "if I'm lucky" bothers me a great deal. For what it cost me I really would like it to have good color.

Also it's bars are incredibly blotchy.I am talking blotchy like it thinks its an NGT and weather or not its possible it almost looks like a NGT/ST hybrid. You guys will see in the pics.

Also there is an issue with his personality.I have had fish want to hide for awhile after being introduced to the tank but this guy immediately went to work trying to push himself under all my decorations and has not stopped for the last 48 hours. He is just going around the tank trying to shove himself under rocks and driftwood alike. After he's tried them all he starts over again.Just his persistence in doing this is really making him seem like he's not carrying a full deck...as though an ugly ST wasn't enough he also has to be mentally handicapped, just my luck.:screwy:

I will take out all the deco before I will make a cave large enough to house a 6.5" dat,esp since if I make him one I have to make everybody one.Sucks though because I have a BGK and some loaches,I am not sure how they will cope with having no deco whatsoever.

Last thing is his eye.I was trying to explain it in photo lounge but I don't think it was understood what I was trying to say, hopefully a dat expert who understands what I am saying can help me here in the dat section.

Here is my explanation of the eye problem the best I can give it,copied from my other thread in photo lounge:

I noticed dats have their inside their eye what almost looks like another "lens" covering their pupil. Its the thing that makes their eyes glow blue so often when people are trying to take pics of them.My indos have it, you can see it especially from the side like when they are facing you, and I can see now how I almost mistook it for an air bubble.

whats up with my dat is on one side that little lens is pushed in.When you look with a flashlight you can still see it but its pushed pack into the pupil not covering it.Thats the only way I can explain it.

I made a little illustration showing a normal dat eye with the "second lens" over the pupil (a) and then another showing how my dats eye looks..you can still see the second pupil but its pushed back down into the eye and almost looks like an air bubble.

also I took some pics that clearly show what I am trying to explain. The eye thats messed up is the one on his right.I took pics from both sides so you can clearly see the difference.

It is clearly visible in person and is enough on its own that if it's not likely to heal up I will probably be trying to sell this dat if thats even a feasible endeavor.

so what do you guys think about his bars and color?

what do you think about him continuously trying to hide when I have nowhere for him to really hide because he's too big?And on that note what do you think about removing all deco and the impact it might have on my BGK and CL's?

what do you think about his eye as far as weather or not it might heal up or if you can even see what I am talking about?

thank you for your time,SPF

so what do you guys think about his bars and color?

His bars wont get any better. I can tell that the blotchy-ness is from 1 or 2 things, either he was beaten severley with past tank mates or he was just born this way. Either way, his bars will stay like that.

what do you think about him continuously trying to hide when I have nowhere for him to really hide because he's too big?And on that note what do you think about removing all deco and the impact it might have on my BGK and CL's?

If he keeps trying to hide then just take out all the decor and leave the lights off for a few days until he gets confident in the tank. Datnoides are a mostley a nocturnal fish, if you try to force them into the light and they have no where to go, of course they are going to try to shove them selves under things.

Also i dont know how well the BGK would do as they are a really sensitive fish and are supposed to be in a planted tank or a tank with smaller fish and given plenty of hiding spaces. They shouldent be in tanks with large brute type fish.

The CL's will be fine as long as the Dats cant eat them.

what do you think about his eye as far as weather or not it might heal up or if you can even see what I am talking about?

Cant really help you that much on his eye but i really doubt it would heal up since the lens looks like it almost moved in his eye. I think he would require a operation to fix it.

thanks for the tips.I may have to remove the BGK I was only keeping him because he is my oldest fish and big (12"+) so I figured he would be okay with dats and loaches.so all in all do you figure it to be a fairly poor quality widbebar?

No ST in my opinion is low quality but if you were to judge it i would say yes it is "lower quality"

That ST needs some love. I agree that the bars will always be muddy. The color will get better as it gets more comfortable in the tank. He looks extremely stressed and sickly. Stuff him up with lots of Shrimp to fill that sunken in stomach. I would also get him his own tank thats heavily planted or dim with some larger pieces of driftwood. About his eye, I think its up to you if you can live with it. If it bothers you that much I'll buy it from you. Its probably seen better days ut its still an ST. I think once he settles in and gets fatten up he'll be a great addition to anybodys tank. Good luck.

From those pictures it looks like one of its old tank mates were picking on it. If i'm right, and I might not be, they should heal up with time.

Also the gold isn't THAT bad. And once it gets use to your tank it should get even better.

I'm not trying to be a pain, but if you have so many problems with the fish, why did you buy it?

I like it. I wouldn't try to sell it.

The eye is NOT obvious to those who aren't looking. The bars give it character!

Thanks guys.

well the pic the guy showed me when it was in his tank made it look like a pretty nice dat thats the only reason I got it.He never mentioned anything about the eye but I'm not trippin theres no hard feelings or anything.

He also made an 8 hour drive to get it to me.

I may be able to stop noticing the eye so much and keep it and just get another nice quality ST, but I would trade him for a small widebar with nicer color and bars in a second....:naughty:

I took all the deco out of my tank except a few rocks on the bottom and a piece of driftwood my BGK hides under...which I still have not decided if I will be needing to remove him because he is the largest fish i the tank...now all the ST does is hide up at the top as far as he can get so he is almost sideways.

I also took the brightest light off my tank.

Now the last issue is why he so skinny and doesn't eat.He wasn't skinny in the pic I got but he was skinny by the time he got to my house.I was told he was eating well but for him to already be that skinny he must not have been...I wonder why.....esp. since the other two are eating....

He is interested in food but isn't even coming close to trying it yet.....

heres the pic I saw of him in the guys tank who I got him from:

it should get a better colour once settled but the bars will stay patchy which imo is not a problem at all.
as for hiding well its new and scared and needs time to settle, this goes for it eating too so give it time them feed lots to get it into shape.
as for the eye it may have been damaged previously or it may have been a defect at birth but really it matters not.

Have patience with this guy. Don't give up on him so quickly. Like all the others said, he needs TLC and some good feeding. He WILL look better if you give him this. Don't be in such a hurry to get him to be a "perfect" dat. These fish are smart and have personality, thats why hes acting the way he is. Give the little guy some time. Or just give him to me! ;)
