I am new to the tropical/monster fish keeping unless you count Koi, and I see tons of people on here talking about Datnoids.

They seem really cool looking, and I am interested in getting one. A siamese Tiger Datnoid to be exact.

What size tank should they start out in when quarter size?
How fast do they grow?
Are they aggressive?
What kind of tank mates can they have?
Are they hard to care for?

I do know that they will eat smaller fish.

I see a lot of people with small datnoids, and they are so neat and clean looking. Do they get messy in pattern as they get larger?

They don't need a big tank to start with
How fast do they grow?
they grow pretty slowly
Are they aggressive?
Not to aggresive
What kind of tank mates can they have?
Lots of people keep them with arowana, pbass, bichirs, etc
Are they hard to care for?
Shouldn't be that hard if you keep them in a large tank
:)

How many should you keep together? Is just one ok?

and Can they live with Jack Dempseys? I have 2 2'' babies.

Unless your willing to spend $1000+ your not gonna get a Siamese. An indo would be the closest to a Siamese, indos can grow 18" but usually a bit smaller . Eventually you'd want a 125 but they do grow pretty slowly so something like a 75 could last a few years.

you could keep just one if you wanted, a small one should be okay with 2 small jack Dempseys but you would have to watch to make sure they are all getting enough food and that the jacks don't get big enough to eat the dat.

this is the one I want. It's marked as a siamese Tiger Datnoid.

That's an indo. True Siamese are endangered and the only ones in captivity are adults because they are not allowed to be taken from the wild anymore.

mm.. freakin' lfs'.. that is the indonesian tiger.. Its the one that closest resembles the siamese tiger but all tigers are marketed with the word siamese if they are from anywhere near thailand. Since the st is increadibly sought after the word siamese makes the "product" easier to sell..
