WOW...did I have a scare this weekend. I woke up on Sunday and was feeding my fish and everything was going well until I got to one of my datnoid grow-out tanks. All of my ITs were black...I mean JET BLACK and my NGT was up in the corner of the tank barely hanging on.
I got that "oh s**t" hot flash and ripped the hood off as fast as I could to start diagnosing the problem. I grabbed my test kit, plunged it into the water and...it was ICE COLD.
I checked the thermometer...62 degrees!!! We had left one of our sliders open the night before and I forgot to close it when we went to bed. We live on a river and on the 10th floor so the wind get really cold...especially being in New England. I checked to see if my heaters were working and both of them were dead. What are the chances of that?!?!?
I did a water change and slowly started adding warmer water to bring the tank temp up. I didn't want to shock them by just adding warm water and shoot the temp up 20 degrees in 2 minutes, so I raised it into the low 70s and then threw in a spare heater from my salt tank (thank God I had 3 in there) and as of this morning...so far so good.
Everyone ate before I went to work, and they look much better. Some of them are not stable yet, but at least they are better than they were a day ago.
Has anyone had any heat failures like this? Do you think I'm in the clear?
