I was wondering in what part of the tank that everyone's dats swim in? My dat always stays in a barrel that I put in the tank when his light is on and only comes out when the tank is dark. When I take the barrel out he just sits on the bottom of the tank on the gravel. Is there any way of getting him to swim around in the top half of the tank?
thanks

i put them in a bigger tank with a bigger tankmates...they will swim a lot to fight for food and territory.

My tank is about 90cm deep I think that is about 3 feet tall. My Dat is still fairly small and he mainly swims in the bottom third and occasionally the middle third. He is always at front of the glass waiting for me to walk past so he can show off and will swim up to the top third when it is feeding time.

My dat has his spot of the tank he likes to chill at.But when he is hungry he comes out to beg and compete with the aro

My datnoid is a mid to upper-foreground dweller. He always comes to greet people on the corner near the door. ALWAYS. Thinks he's gonna get feed bloodworms. He recognizes my blue cup I feed worms in. Whenever he sees it he skids across the tank and starts shaking his head back and forth impatient for food :). My Jack Dempsey does the same thing. My fat catfish starts swimming upside down across the glass and at the top of the water line. Reminds me of a devoutly religious bhuddist doing a traditional ceremonial dance. A REALLY FAT ONE TOO. I call her 'miss piggy the morbidly obese catfish'. Its hilarious her belly bulges like a watermelon and she sticks it right in front of your eyes very pleasent sight (not really.)
