Have you tested your water?
Yes
If I did not test my water...
  1. ...I recognize that I will likely be asked to do a test, and that water tests are critical for solving freshwater health problems.
Do you do water changes?
Yes
If I do not change my water...
  1. ...I recognize that I will likely be recommended to do a water change, and water changes are critical for preventing future freshwater health problems.
Hi, I have a datnoid, bichirs, and a featherfin syno in my main display along with a large leopard ctenopoma. I was just curious which treatments people recommend for these fish and how to dose correctly. I keep other scaleless or fine scaled fish and have always been told to half dose but just want clarification for any future issues that may arise, many thanks 🙏

My two go to medications for my stingrays which are sensitive, are prazipro for internal parasites and nitrofurazone for gram positive and gram negative external bacterial pathogens and many other issues that may arise like fin and tail rot and others. Both are mostly filter safe however nitrofurazone can mildly disrupt your good bacteria so it only needs to be monitored, then it also needs all carbon to be removed from your filters since it neutralizes the nitro. Both are ray safe so for your scaleless fish it should be safe for them too. I Recommend a full dose as per bottle and do exactly as they say. Half dose may cause the issues to build a resistance to the medications and not be fully effective. The idea is to knock them out on the first go

You’re very welcome bro!
Just got back from work and all the cichlids and silver dollars in the tank have what looks like ich. Any treatments you can recommend for this that will be safe to use with the dat and bichirs? Did a water change yesterday and overnight this has happened. Water is fine so not too sure what’s triggered this.

For ich you should raise the water temp very gradually up to 88 F for a couple days and that will kill all the ick in the tank and all your fish should be able to handle the temperature increase without issues

It’s fascinating to see the passion for Datnoid fish in this thread! I've kept them for years, and while their beauty is undeniable, I’ve noticed that stress can be a critical factor affecting their health. Are there specific tank mates or environments you’ve found that help minimize that stress?

This is only my second time keeping them but I’ve always found more peaceful and less outgoing fish to be the way forward. My Datnoid was very confident from the get go and so I’ve introduced other fish with it that are slightly more outgoing. in my limited experience I’ve found geophagus to work very well and I’ve also been recommended toxotes Blythii which I will be testing very soon when I move my group in with the dat. I’ve got a minimalistic scape with darker areas mainly consisting of larger bogwood, low lighting, some java fern, and tanned water.
