I was looking into getting some dats because they look like some awesome fish, but I was wondering everything you need to know about them.
First of all what species can live in a 125g for life?
And also why do some dats in the buy/sell threads sell for thousands of $'s when you cab buy them younger for like $40?

there are many many different kinds of dats .. some of which are just about impossible to get .. others you can get anywhere ... $40 dat = common $1200 dat = rare ..

and the footprint is important .. since dats can get around 18" you need a tank that is at least 24" deep .. but a 125 could hold them for a long time since they take years to get to 18"

I really like the Indo's (Datnioides microlepis), seem fairly common and should be fine for a 125g. They tend to grow to 5-7inches much faster than 7-15", so they go for way less when younger. My AT (silver) grew to 6" in less than a year, but grew only an inch in the following 6months. With some patience, that $40 dat will be worth many times that.

Yeah that's what I was wondering thank you, so if I am new to dats, and I was wondering what species to start with.

Alright and how much do adult ntts at about 14" go for? And are dats a good combo with clown loaches, lol I thought the stripes would be a cool combo

14" ntt depends from 100-250 it really depends on how bad you want it clown loaches would work but they grow very very slow!

Haha yep, I was gonna get a school and start growing them out now before I get the dats

or you can try and get some at the same size they're both fairly slow growers

I just picked up a NTT for $35, only about 2in, so was thinking it might be a good time to get some loaches or something, let them grow with my NTT (and other smaller ones) till they're big enough to add with my others. Its a good way to start out, and alot less money to invest
