hey guys... new to the site here... and new to this particular type of fish... are they jumpers? as in should i have a cover on my tank... i have a 120 planted tank that has lights hanging from the celing... should i build a canopy or will i be ok

Every now and then i hear about peoples dats jumping. I lost my widebar because he jumped and my dog thought hmmm interesting, FOOD! I generally like to keep covers on my tanks to keep down evaporation as well.

ok also another point... i dont have much of a problem with evaporation as i do weekly water changes and it maybe drops 1/2 inch.
ok so maybe it would be a good idea to build a canopy for my 120 gallon before i put them in... i have angel fish in the 120 gal tank now and they never jump... but then different species all togather.
thanks for advice

they are not jumpers but they are nervous, so it could happend ;)

I would say a canopy would be a good idea...or even a simple versa-top would work fine.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect angels to be big jumpers...not exactly "lightning quick" fish:D ...dats however, can boogey when they want to, so containing them is a good preventative measuer.

Every once and a while my terror AT will get all the other dats going and I can hear them hit the canopy every once and while. :screwy:

Never had a problem with jumping. Usually when they get scared, they try to get low to the ground and hide under something.

the babies are in the 120 gal now... happy as hell with angel fish and large diamond tetra

never had one jump out of the tank but while in a bucket getting acclimated they will jump

Dats are not jumpers. Unless you have something chasing it or the water quality is horrible they will stay contained. Every now and then when I feed my dats, they actually swim so fast because of competition that they jump out of the water but they never jump high enough to jump out of the tank.
