I have 1 IT dat (5.5"-6") and 3 pbass (6"-7.5") in the same tank. During day time, the dat sometimes chases the pbass making noises and water flashes. It is much worse at night however. I'm posting because it's getting worse recently, and the wife is getting annoyed. We sleep right on top of the tank on the upper floor with the door open and can hear the noise all night long. The good thing is that all 3 pbass share the aggression so no particular one is hurt...yet!

The dat always stays on the bottom while the pbass stay on top. Is there a way to curb the aggression a bit, or is this the way it is with the two species? Would having driftwoods help? Should I power feed the pbass to make them a lot bigger than the dat sooner to deal with this? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I have had lots of dats w/ cichla and dont think it works out to well.

At one time I had ten IT from 5-10" w/ 5 cichla that are 12-16" and it just got worse and worse.

IMO dats and cichla dont work well together in the long term. The dats will harass the cichla.....it will go back and forward....not worth it to me. SO the dats had to go.

I had the same issue when my Orinos were about 7", i added a tiny 3" Thinbar that just harrassed the hell out of them...I tried everything i could think of but just couldn't get the lil guy to leave them alone. Finnally ended up giving the Dat to a buddy.

Add more Dats.

Dont add more dats. I had 20 at one point...reduced to 10. Still harrased my cichla. IMO dats and cichla dont work well. But it is a combo that is done quite often. I like my bass a lot more than dats so I wont mix them again.

How big were your cichla when they were in with the dats?

Keeping a cichla with 2,4,5 and so on Dat's (Regardless of size of the dats), the aggression would/will spread out through the dats and not the cichla.

Add more dats.

This is not true. Do you have the combo? I had dats from 5-10" in w/ cichla that were 12-16". I speak from experience. If like your cichla more than your dats sell your dat. If you like your dat more....sell your cichla.
IMO cichla and dats do not match up that well. I, would not add any dats.

My Dats never once bothered my kelberi's, Azuls, Peruvian Mono's, Guyana Ocell's, Tem's or Orino's. I had/have this combo even today. I speak from experience. I had never had problems with this combo. Even when I added my 14'' dat to the Cichla tank, Nothing happened. 12'' and 14'' dat in with 3x 10-14'' kelberi's with no problems. I can't really see how or why you dat is picking on your Cichla. Is it just those 4 in the tank?

Op, you are more then welcome to check my old threads to see for yourself, But I like this combo and I would keep doing this combo of Dats and Cichla.

^^^good to hear that hayn. All fish are different. Didnt work out well for me tho.

Thanks guys. All fish are different, and my dat happens to be a nasty one.

Bad thing. I recently discovered that the smallest pbass no longer could see on one side :( even though the eye on that side looks similar to that on the other side. But I must admit that both eyes of this pbass look very different from the other two bigger pbass, which look similar to each other. I'll see if I can get some pics to show what I'm saying. The dat must be the culprit to this damage!

And water is on the floor every morning nowadays, not much but enough to notice...

I really hope I wouldn't have to separate the dat and pbass.
