I'd really love to get some wide bar cichlids but not sure how they'd get on with my cichlids. they're all pretty peaceful with large full size gold sev, green sev, bocourti and a geophagus surinamsis plus a few smaller ones such as my salvini, convict and rainbows.

anyone got any experience of keeping these 2 types of fish together?

I've never kept wide bar dats. but I kept some bor neos before with some semi-aggressive cichlids. thing is because most dats are wild caught you have to check water params. more often. The fish you have now usually aren't that hostile so you should be able to get away with it.

I've kept dats with a number of less-aggressive cichlid species and they were fine together. only problem I ran into was feeding. while cichlids will readily take pellets and other prepared foods, the dat I used to have would only eat freeze dried krill. so I'd drop some pellets in the tank and while the cichlids were all busy gobbling them up, I"d get out the krill and hold a piece in front of the glass. the dat would come out and come up to the front and follow my hand up to the top and snatch up the krill as soon as it hit the surface. man I miss that little guy. (he didn't survive when I moved a couple of years ago. :( )

I think you'll be fine with the cichlid species you're wanting to keep the dat with. just keep an eye on the salvini and convict as they get bigger. :)

If you can find one, I wouldn't risk it with aggressive fish. Too delicate, rare and expensive!:nilly:

What size tank? Dats will bully some other fish. Mine terrorized my bala sharks, and intermittently picked on my severums and Uarus. Gets along fine with the Oscars, but he and and synspillum have a definite hate/hate relationship going on. No real damage so far, but I feel another tank coming on.
