hi this is my first post here, but i have been reading and learning here for a long time. This is a GREAT site

Im am currently in the process of building a 8x3x2 (360 gallon?) tank for my current 9" Silver Aro,and was considering a small group of dats

My question is can i keep them in a group of 3 succesfully? Will i have aggression issues? I know with even the more peaceful large cichlids it takes 4-5 to spread out the aggression. I do not want to constany have to worry about one fish taking a beating as I would like this to eventualy be a lower maintnance tank in 1.5-2 years when I transfer to a different college and am often away.

Also how do you all like your dats? Are they fun to watch and do they interact with eachother? they do look nice but I was curious if there worth the money in behavior as well.

Thanks in advance :D

I have kept multiple dats together and have seen many tanks with them together and I have also seen tanks were this didn't work mostly with ngt, but they are great fish with awesome personality and I enjoy watching them over most fish, as far as low maintenance it depends what you mean they do like verry clean water and the food they eat fouls your water fast

NGT's...... either keep 1 per tank or 5 (very big tank) as they will fight to the death if you only keep 2......

as to widebars, thinbars I do believe that keeping any number will work....:)

how are they with plans? are they like leaf fish/ctenopomas?

yea I was curious about that aswell as the tank will be lightly planted...

Thanks for the replys I think I might stick to one NTG ($) after hearing your replys. I wanna keep the bioload low enough so that when im away the tank wont crash.

thanks again by the way how do they behave when kept singly?

They will hide and act real scarred until they are over a few inches (mine always hide as I have a 2 ''er and a 3.5''er (in seperate tanks)......maybe try a night light type lighting led maybe if you want to see your NGT more......:)

P.s. cant wait till they get nice and big and rule the tank!!!

i have no idea what NTG is. some kinda green terror?
i meant do dats act like ctenos? cause mine hides all the time.
