I have a 150 gallon tank, 5x2x2, and want one or a trio of dats, my lfs has some ntt dats for sale, I wanted to know if three dats would be too much for that tank and also what tank mates would work for for either combination, would it make a difference if I got three AT dats, i want the tank to be active and entertaining with regards to tank mates for the datnoids. Do you have any suggestions?

Three NTT in a 150g will suffice for quite a long time, I wouldn't be concerned with it as you should have ample time to plan an upgrade or rehome a few years down the line for them should it ever be necessary considering the average growth rate of datnoids in general.

As for tank mates I prefer to keep my fish regional so in this case south East Asian fish would be my preference. Some Spiny Eel species that exceed 12" would be a good choice as they are generally fairly active. Larger Barb species are good for filling up space and adding liveliness in a tank with Datnoids who tend to not roam the tank with regularity. Also Clown Loaches like mentioned in your other thread are an excellent choice in my opinion.

If you were to stray from SEA fish, Silver Dollars come to mind. Generally very active fish that reach decent size depending on what species you come across (typically just the common variety of Silver Dollar). Keep in mind that these are particularly skittish fish and it takes very little to spook them so be sure you have a well fitted lid to the tank. They also eat plants so consider that if you plan to have any though this is fairly uncommon in Datnoid tanks.

I would recommend some catfish species but if activity is what you're looking for be aware that while there are some species who could live in your tank for life many of the active species of catfish grow very large, too large for a 150g even.

Hope this gives you something to work with.

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help where I can.

You mentioned AT dats,if you were referring to the silver dats then they would most likely be more active and outgoing than the NTT.That has always been my experience with them.

Would a group of silver dats live in a 150 for life

How many are you considering?...these are fish that can reach twelve inches or better in length.
