I decided to use some scrubbies for my bio in my canister. I purchased the Dawn poly mesh scrubbers. I just wanted to make sure they were safe to use. THey have no metal and are non abrasive. They have a sponge insert. Just double checking before I add them

I'd cut the sponge out. It could easily decompose and make a mess. And is it preloaded with a soap? If so, throw it all away. Read every letter on the package very carefully.
If it doesn't say it's preloaded then it's probably not. Give them a squeeze in some water and make sure they don't make any suds. And if you can get the sponge out of there, all the better. I saw these at Big Lots but didn't buy them because I didn't want to have to mess with the sponge.
Thanks Knifegill! The wife and I went out too late on a Sun to get supplies. GOt to petsmart at 630, they closed at 6. Had about 10 min in Petco (which was pretty much worthless) Rolled up to all the dollar stores 10min after they closed! We found these at a dollar store beside foodlion. Only paid$1.5 for them so I figured I'd give them a try. WHy are you concerned about the sponges breaking down? Does that happen often? I think I would rather not mess with them and just keep an eye on the scrubbies once theyre in canister. Thanks for you help
I get some of the scrubbies at the dollar store one dollar for four I still do the rinsing because Im a little anal about soap getting in my water I guess you can go either way with either taking the sponge out or leaving it in I also found some that have no sponge in them at all they do collect alot of poop so I like to rinse them in a bucket of tank water every once in a while
Yeah, I once tried to use a "normal" sponge in a tank and it decomposed overnight. Clogged the filter and made a real ugly mess. Didn't kill anything, it was just horrid. But being wrapped in the scrubbie, you'll probably have little problem at all even if it did break down a little. I say try it and see.
Rinsed them and no soap. That's a good sign. I'm going to try it. IF I remember, I'll try to update.
