is it really necessary to turn the lights of the tank on and off to simulate the natural day's cycle... or is it okay to leave the lights on all the time????

logic would tell me yes... but then my silver arowana seems to get a bit jumpy when the lights are turned off... not too sure if it's the clown knifefish (which usually comes out more in the dark) that stratles him or what...

anybody's two cents would be much appreciated

all animals need a day and night cycle

so the answer would be yes

clown knife come out in the dark because they have an ability to use the earths magnetic field to navigate and hunt in the darkness of the night, so eye sight is unnessesary.

put it this way would you want the lights on in your room 24/7 well your tryin to sleep? and certian fish are nocturnal so they will only come out at night...im sure leavin the lights on 24/7 would be stressful so to answer your question yes they do need to be turned on and off....o and if you dont like turnin them on and off buy a timer very helpful and will turn on/off at the same time everyday
