they're not particularly aggressive just highly efficient predators, feeding dead food is preferable as there is no transmission of disease as is possible with live food i know they do it differently elsewhere in the world but you are in England and nowadays it's considered unethical to feed live fish as food, although it's your personal choice and is obviously how they feed in the wild, also i find it easier to have frozen foods on hand any time i want to use them,by the way i feed live river shrimp to my fish as a treat but if you are talking about a red SH then it won't be long before it gets to big for these anyhow:)

thank you all for your info

Feeding live food will make your fish more aggressive towards other fish if you ever wanted to have tankmates, as dead foods will not do this. But all the previous posts are correct stating about the transfer of disease and such. Just make sure that you know the best DIET for any fish is a VARIED diet. So knowing this frozen and prepared foods should make up most of the diet and Live can be given as treats, also to give your fish exercise and allow it to hunt. Just make sure if you are not breeding the live fish then you are QT'ing them b4 you give them to your fish.
