HI,

I am thinking about aquascaping my tank and have wondered if anyone has used 'dead' bamboo. Like the stuff used in gardens. I have heard that it can rot and even smell. I wondered if anyone has any experience with this stuff and what success they had?

Nick

Bamboo is great for mangrove species like dats. It will decompose over time. But, I change my pieces out every 2 years with no adverse effects observed in my tanks. Granted, the smallest tank I have bamboo in is a 450 and I may just be dodging a bullet on water quality issues.
I have mine mounted to terracotta flower pot bottoms that are drilled. I drill a hole through the ends of a bamboo stalks and zip-tie them to the terracotta. They make a sort of underwater 'forest' for the dats to weave through.

Oddball do you mind taking a picture of said setup please??? There are so many fish in your collection that i wanna see! (african aros)

i've done this before,it made my water smell like as if it is acidic,I used 2 bamboos(3inch diam.) with its roots as a decorative purpose, after 1 month nothing bad happened to my fish .but i already removed fearing what might happened in the long term.it made my water very acidic,I can smell it,maybe because of its rotting roots

Thanks for your comments.

I'm thinking about setting an Asian biotope and the bamboo would really set it off. I'll give it ago and let you know if it all goes t*ts up.

I had the same issue with the smell of the water. no noticeably ill effects to the fish while i had the bamboo in there, but eventually ended up taking it all out to clear up some swimming room as the fish were getting bigger.
