My baby bichir that i had for maybe a week or too died last night

i was feeding him market shrimp i dropped a small piece in and walked away i came back like 1 hour later

then when i walked in i saw him floating at the top of the tank

i think he choked on nthe shrimp then wasnt able to breath so i hanked him out pulled the shrimp out of his throut with twesears and then i put him in a spare 5g tank with a dose of salt

woke up this morning to him being dead

has anyone ever had this happen to them before

it was my first bichir ever so i am planning on getting another one today causse he ended up being my favorite little fishy:cry:

Sorry you lost a Bichir, they are great animals.

You definitely have to be careful with the size of the pieces you give them. And to any fish at that rate. All my fish are well over 12" long in my community and I still chop their shrimps in small sizes. Always easier for them.

pick yourself up .. go back to the fish store and get yourself another .. at least now you've got some experience of raising bichirs ..

start very young bichirs off on very small foods bloodworms, cut pellets, chopped squid, guppy fry etc.
Once they get bigger then add other foods it is possible for bichirs and many fish to ''choke to death''-Anne

idont get how he choked on it though
my brother has a comunity tank and i took one of his swordtails and the bbichirs ate that

no it was a piece or the like raw market shrimp

i ripp of the tip/ hard thing then throw it in boiling water for like a minute so it cooks alittle then i cut it into small little pieces

Don't need to cook it, just feed it raw. Boiling it just takes away a lot of the good nutrients. If you buy fresh shrimp (not pre-frozen) it would be a good idea to freeze them first to kill any potential bacteria.

I know this thread was like 7 years ago but i just wanted to say my 3.5" lapradei died from eating a chunk of shrimp bigger than he could chew, he ate it and it was in his stomach but the next day he was upside down. Try to chop your shrimp into tinier bits.
