My buttikoferi died unfortunately and I have no clue what caused it. The water is clean and he was eating fine. I noticed a weird kind of coat starting to form on him. It made him look like he had a grayish tint. There was also a glaze over his eyes to and his "skin" appeared to be peeling. Let me know what you guys think.
thanks

I'm not that experienced with bichirs yet, but it sounds like fungus to me. Peeling skin could be some kind of secondary infection. What kind of tankmates and how long did you have it? Any plecos in the tank?

Polypterus palmas buettikoferi = Bichir

buttikoferi tilapia = Cichlid

I am guessing by the spelling that we are talking a cichlid?

Thanks... Would the fungus still be in the tank??? Should I do a water change or add chemicals to the water??

If I'm not mistaken fungus, if that's what it was, is usually a water quality issue. If it were me I would do a big water change of 50% or more. Use a dechlorinator like Amquel Plus or Prime.

Get a test kit if you don't have one already (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph) and check your water parameters. The test results will help determine a further course of action water quality wise. Observe the rest of your fish closely for the next week for any signs of illness.

If that weird coat started to form on him after he died, then it's just part of the decaying process.........
