i recently obtained 2 3" hap. compressiceps from a local supplier and much my dismay they were belly up the very next day. i checked my water quality and other than a very slight elevation of nitrates everything was optimal. Is this species particularly difficult to keep. I would really like to keep these fascinating cichlids. any tips on their care and husbandry would be very appreciated.

cheers

To have them both die in a day it would have to have been something serious. There still could have been a spike in ammonia, just that you tested too late. But also transportation in the cold or some other huge stress could have caused it.

i checked for ammonia prior to placing them in the tank...ammonia was fine and all of my other fish are doing great.

I know, I am just saying that to have both of them to die so sudden something had to have happened.

of course. they were doing great until the next morning. they were swimming around almost immediately after acclimation. there were no visible signs of stress or disease (rapid breathing, floating, clamped fins, etc.). are these fish hardy?

from what I have seen they are...that is odd, I often do not see them that small however... that may have something to do with it... I find it strange that you would lose them so fast at once...

what is your acclimation process? Trying to get some ideas... if the levels where fine in tank... how did you move them, bag, in cooler, bucket time in cold? this type info...

maybe we can come up with something...

It could have been from transportation stress I had a al eureka red just clamp fins and go belly up after netting it out and putting in to catch cup .After a few minutes he came back to but died the next day.

they were transported in the standard double bad which i placed in a styrfoam cooler because it was quite cool that day. i acclimated by setting up a drip system using airpump tubes. the process took about 30 minutes...is it possible that the mbuna already in my tankharassed them to death. i checked the bodies however and other than being tossed about by the filters they looked fine.
