last night polypterus delhezi was swimming around as usal then at around 1 am I noticed he was belly up and trying right himself by 6 am he was dead fished him out and left him a bucket of water as I had to go to work any way this afternoon I took him out and placed on a piece of tissue at inspect him I noticed blood stains around the anal area and some of this stained the tissue I am gutted as he was my favourite fish . He was 4 years old and was about 13" I have a four year old senegal as well he seems to have missed his mate can any one share some opinions of what may have caused his death amonia nitrite and nitrate all zero ph around 7 temp around 27.3 c

Sorry to hear this. :( These guys are special.

Nitrates are 0? They really shouldn't be except maybe in a really understocked heavily planted tank...

I'm not sure, I think it is related to feeding, and then air gets trapped somehow. I feed catfish once per week (before WCs because it's oily) to help with this based on reading from this site. I also feel like it's more common with CB vs. WC polys because they tend to gorge themselves more, but I am not 100% sure on that.

Someone else will be far better in answering this one.

OP, what do you typically feed your polys?

Really sorry to hear about your delheIzi. Sounds like he was a good fish. Glad you got to spend some special years with him. Rest In Peace little del. :(

Ime with Del's they sometimes spazz out ramming into the walls of the aquarium and rupturing internally. But like others say possibly bloat. Sorry for your loss.

Could be from ramming into something as well. The blood around the cloaca doesn't sound right. Could be bloat or ruptured gut. Infection from a perforation. Hard to say...but tlindsey tlindsey you can be right as well.
