I'm not sure where to put this thread, so Other Monsters is where I've landed. Where do Blue Gourami discussions belong?

Anyway, I just had my second Blue Gourami die, only had him a week. The one before that lived a few mos, then died just like this one. Fine last night, deader than a doornail this am. (First one my Aro ate, oops) So I have a 55 g community tank going on now, params good, temp 79, all small, docile fish that get along and no one is big enough to hurt these Gourami's. I inspected his body, no signs of any trauma or injury at all.

My flame Gour. is still fine, thriving. I have some Julii's, Angel, clown L, the usual collection but the main thing is, I don't think it was foul play. So I'm an Arowana keeper usually, not used to having the smaller species, but WTF???

I feed bloodworms and flakes.

Help a dudezette out here, what gives? Any clues or guesses as to why? :WHOA:

could be stress? were there other signs and symptoms coming from other tank mates the night before? a post mortem maybe?

Are you talking a normal blue gourami or a powder blue dwarf gourami?

Normal blue gouramis are extremely hardy so I don't know why it would have died suddenly unless the tank parameters were extremely out of whack, and even then the other fish would have parished probably.

Dwarf gouramis aren't very hardy, are in/overbred and often have health problems, so if it was a dwarf gourami who knows. Also the flame gourami could have harrassed it and stressed it out enough that it died. Dwarf gouramis don't always do well when mixed with each other.
I used to have a male and female dwarf gourami. I had them for about 5 days and the male harrassed the female to the point where she didn't come out of the top corner of the tank, then she died.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I've got 3 BGs(least I think ther'ye blue gouramis) living with my aros now and they seem to be very hardy fish, sorry no clue as to what went wrong. The other night, the BG in the pic below actually became the first fish to be in the mouth of each of my silver aros. The problem is, the BG likes to try to get some shrimp during feeding time and has gotten in the way. He seems to be all right though just missing a few scales:grinno: (Pics are from before the incident)

They were the powder Blue Dwarf's, the flame is only slightly larger. It was territorial, but it seems like the bad things always happen at night. It could have been picked on, but I don't see how it could be hurt physically. I'm guessing now it was probably stress from the others.

The other fish are all fine still. Thanks for some insight. I'm starting to wonder about pets, it's so hard to lose them. It's a bad day anyway, my cat was diagnosed with heart failure yesterday, don't know if she's even going to pull thru the weekend. What gives?

Thanks-Mei

Bderick67, That's a Moonlight gourami, I believe.

sorry about your pets meiling. my dwarfs 2 blue and a gold have been around for about a year. they are now in a 300g with 3 oscars and are fine. maybe you just got a weak one. We just had kittens, want one?

Ohhhhh I love kittens, sure, I'll take the whole litter!!! NOT! I'm already over catted with 5, but at least I have a house with space and 200 acres of ranch. I can't let them out though, the other night my cat was out at night playing with something......then came the tell tale "hisssss", so shovels and flashlights came out for the hunt. We found him, this was the now sick cat. That was one of nine lives.........

Local news had this guy kill a huge rattler, whacked it's head off, then it bit him (the head)!!!

Have had 2 snakes actually get in the house. One got stuck to the floor, it was sticky because the floor was being redone, so the snake got stuck. The snake was really *issed off!

The other one was under my aquarium, curled up and aggressive, I was standing on top of the back of the couch, debating the .45 (small hole in floor), the 12 G shotgun (no no, not inside, BIG hole in floor) or the stalker rifle!!! I relented with a bucket and snake stick since that one was a bullsnake. It's hard to tell sometimes.......OK done babbling.
