so about a week ago after doing a water change i found my fx6 stopped working. i thought nothing of it and thought maybe it was just self priming itself. this week when i was doing a water change i found that it still wasnt working. when i opened up my fx6 the water smelled foul and it stunk up my entire house. i opened it up to find that the impeller is cracked. i called fluval and they are going to send me a new impellor. but it will take a week. seeing that the filter media inside the fx6 is already dead, should i jsut start it all over? or should i just clean it of and try to put it into one of my sumps. i am afraid the dead bacteria will affect my filtration.

That blows, sorry to hear,I wonder how that happened...If you mean the sponges and such I would give them a thorough rinse with a garden hose and then go ahead and put them in the sump for seeding until the impeller arrives.

Don't throw away the media there is some beneficial bacteria. Throw in some sponge filters in there you can filter your tank with this with no other filtration so you should be fine.

If you have a powerhead you can make a sponge filter really quick.

I would rinse everything with mild bleach water and start from scratch like it was a new filter. I wouldn't risk it.

Notice I didn't bothering to say he should have bought an Eheim classic and it wouldn't have happened? Aren't you proud of me?

I doubt if any of BB is alive at this point since he mentioned that the filter has been off for a few days. There has been no water moving through the unit so no oxygen has been delivered to the bacteria.

i wasnt planning on throwing it away... i was planning on just putting it in another empty tank and just cycle it by itself. lol im not dumb enough to throw away 50$ worth of media haha

hey jay, its on my marbled tank... thankfully they are doing great still... and that drip filter sump is still running my filtration fine. i increased the water changes though. i dont have any sand. i am just afraid of putting it back on my ray tanks cause of the ammonia build up in the fx6... even when i wash it, it still stinks to high hell. all the media is currently in a 10 gallon tank with an air pump and water pump.
