Didn't expect to be creating another thread about this guy so quickly especially one about him dying. I really want to buy another one but I'm hesitant as I haven't lost a fish in awhile(knock on wood) and it really gets to me when I do.So I'd really appreciate some help figuring out why I lost him. Was it something I did or was it just my bad luck, thanks in advance sincerely.

Now the quick back story I literally bought this guy 2 days ago went to sleep around 3am and wake up around 8am to him dead. Matter of fact the pics I took of him where from last night and he seemed okay in my opinion. He doesn't have any signs of physical damage such as from an attack of another fish, however his eyes are deeply recessed this morning. Also someone suggested ick or velvet because of the white spots, I thought they where just normal bumps associated with the Pleco. Checked my water parameter's immediately and everything checks out, temp. 82/ ph 7.0/ ammonia 0ppm/ nitrite 0ppm and nitrate 5ppm. None of the other fish are showing any signs of disease or distress, no rapid respiration, listlessness or any other signs of stress. I do have fake driftwood(plastic) along with real driftwood in my tank and it was suggested to me that it's not good to have fake driftwood in the tank as the Pleco could ingest it. Is it possible that he ingested some plastic and it killed him?

Any help you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated as it is this is really bothering me. As I've said I'm not used to losing fish and it's been along while since I lost one(knock on wood) and it's really upsetting that I lost this guy. In one day he grew on me and I really want to get another, but won't if I can't figure out why I lost him as I don't want it to happen again. Again thank you guys in advance.

IMO he had something like ick from looking at him. Was the belly real sunk in? Did you get him from a LFS? If you see wood eating plecos at fish shops with no wood in their tanks then that shop don't/care about their fish let alone what disease or parasite they have.above all plecos are real strange, sometimes plecos will live for years and sometimes they will just die shortly after getting them for no good reason?

Thanx bro, appreciate the suggestion. I did get him at a LFS(Petland) but I think he was only there for a day or 2 at most(I frequent the store often), but yeah they definitely didn't have any wood in their tank. I had thought the white spots where just normal bumps then again I never really looked at Royal Pleco's up close in person. If I get a little more info and suggestions I plan on hitting SharkAqaurium for another one. Didn't know Pleco's where prone to sudden death like that, I always took them for granted figuring they where a relatively easy fish to keep. Thanx again bro!

He has velvet, nasty stuff that killed half my fish. IMO in your tank, probably warmer then the lfs, the parasites life cycle sped up and did the fish in, happened to me, thought it was Ich so I boosted the temp and in the first night of treatment lost 4 fish. Btw I would treat the rest of your tank.. Always quarantine!

Once you see the "gold dust" of velvet, it's pretty advanced and commercial meds are really the only cure.

Thanx bro! While I'm hoping your wrong I immediately took action, better to be safe than sorry. Turned off the lights in the aquarium covered the tank so it gets no light bumped the temp. added salt and copper sulphate and preparing for water changes to keep the dissolved oxygen content up and make sure the fish can breathe. Sucks that's my favorite tank it's in my bedroom and was a constant source of joy for me now I'm gonna have to do without it to clear up any velvet outbreak that might be running around in their.

Not sure what velvet is. If I saw him I would assume he had really bad ick. Either way that would be a sketchy buy.

My black rhom passed away yesterday too, had him almost 2 months and he was. 5" when I got him and near 1.5" when he passed, he ate my sponge filter...... so i feel ur pain, I've been kicking my self the past 24 hours. I kept every element perfect (water food temp etc) so to lose a fish to something like that hurts.

But hey I already bought a new one from my dealer and he's only 2-3 weeks old so with good comes bad, hang in there and believe me it sucks more when u succesfully fatten them up for 2 months and then they randomly die!

Id think u could recop some $$ back?

I just dealt with velvet not even a month ago, and I did a lot of research on the parasite, and that's one of the dangers or it, people think its Ick so they treat for it, high temps and salt. However neither of these has an effect on velvet, just commercial meds/copper. temp makes things worse and salt doesn't do anything.

My 8 inch bright eyed royal has the exact same white bumps on him, i though it was just how the skin was on them. How should i treat it, if it is a disease?
