hey guys i just moved all my fish from my old 36 gallon to my new 125 gallon. and im not sure if my pleco died from the stress from the transition or if he starved because the new tank doesnt have any algae on it. my other 2 plecos seem to be okay so far. the tank has been up for 2 days now. but what im wondering is can a pleco thrive with driftwood and algae only?(i have my lights going over time to build the algae) right now i dont have any driftwood but im going to get some tomorrow. btw i give them cucumber as well. i have only seen one of them eating it though. its a common pleco if that helps.

i really like plecos and i want my 2 remaining ones to get big since i have the proper sized tank for them.

No, they need to be fed a variety of foods; algae waffers, zucchini, and sinking pellets..

I seriously doubt your Pleco would starve from 2 days of not eating. Some people don't feel it's necessary to even feed their plecos a staple food. I know they can survive a while by scavenging the substrate for left over food, and parts of indigested food from the other tank stock's feces.

I personally used to feed mine a mix of algae logs and wafers every 2-3 days. I'd throw them in right before lights out at night time. I also frequently gave him zucchini and cucumber that I sliced long ways and rubberbanded to slate. He would destroy the veggies. I recommend you feed your pleco a good algae log/wafer as a staple food mixed up with veggies like I did. Mine grew up to 9"+ in no time before I gave him to a fellow mfker. Generated way too much waste for my fancy. I also have a Clown Pleco I practically never see in my 45g that I only throw algae wafers in for maybe once a week and he seems fine. I moved everything around in the tank few days ago and he swam on out from the rocks and looks fat and healthy. Of course flake food definitely sinks into the rocks 2x daily so I'm sure he feeds on that during the week as well.

Also, a 125 is not going to sustain a common pleco for life let alone 2.

well the problem is i have serpae tetras that go nuts over the sinkable wafers that i have. ill drop them in at night, but i can still see the serpaes "frenzy" at the bottom in the shadows. so sinkable wafers is a no go. but good thing zucchini and cucumber is ignored by them.

btw i just tested my water and my nitrites are at 0.25(liquid test kit). is that enough to kill a pleco? i left the cucumber in for about a day and a half. that must have been causing it. so i took that out and put in a fresh zucchini that ill take out in the morning.

new discovery! i just noticed that one of the plecos shakes around every now and then. could it be the nitrites??

I have found that not many common plecos like vegetation. They like meat! Massivore would be great for them.

okay they eat small amounts of meat but vegetables is their main diet. but what do you think of the nitrite issue? could that kill a pleco? along with the stress of moving tanks?

You don't get my point.. these plecos are more carnivorous than vegetarians.. they should be on more meat than anything.

I don't the nitrite lever would kill a pleco. Could be the stress, could have been anything.
