I work at a lfs. Our female "Red Caquet" ray died over night. I have no clue what happened. Nitrates were a tad high but the system the ray was in is always a bit high because of the amount of bio in the sump. I do large weekly water changes. The ray had been here for about 8 months. Eating like a champ everyday. She even popped out a single pup after she was here for a couple weeks. The only thing I have noticed is some redness in the stomach. looks internal. I just want to know if it was something we did that can be prevented.

I think I have attached some photos. havnt done that yet so I hope I did it right.

some things we will need to know to help solve the problem or find out what may have caused it

what kind of substrate was in the tank she was in.
if your nitrates were high, what were they at?
did you check ammonia, nitirites and ph.
is there a heater in her tank and if so, was it uncovered or covered.
is the water you have in her tank cycles thru all the rest of the tanks in your shop?
what was the temp of the water
any other tank mates, if so how big are they..
what were you feeding her

All rays turn red on their belly when they die. The blood settles in the lowest point. You will probably never find the answer. Sometimes rays just die and that species which is closely related to retics are touchy. They are fine today and dead tomorrow. Could be stress of being in captivity.

carib sea instant aquarium sunset gold sand.

did you check ammonia, nitirites and ph.
ammonia - 0
nitrites- 0
ph - 6.5
gh - 100
kh - 30

in sump

big system with 5 tanks. the whole system is about 550gal. none of the other fish seem to be acting out of the norm

what was the temp of the water
84

any other tank mates, if so how big are they..
no tank mates except the pup at about 6in diameter

what were you feeding her
ghost shrimp, black worms, earthworms. all live no frozen.

My guess is when you put it in the plastic bag it died... due to lack of water of course... Im jk sad to hear. Culd it have been from water params or maybe age?

lol. params seemed fine to me. the temp usually sits a tad lower so maybe a temp change did it?

temp change could have been it, but cant tell for sure. usually they sit around 78-80 deg. Mine seem to like that temp well.
Sometimes they just die.
Could have also been something from one of the other fish. Since you have several tanks that are cycled together, if you added any new fish to any of those tanks, one may have had a parasite that got into the water system.
sorry for your loss

i appriciate the input guys! thanks for the help.

Other then the temp being a bit high for my taste everything seems ideal

25 Nitrates isn't going to hurt anything IMO

Sorry for your loss sometimes you never find out why :(
