so the family is going down to denver/fort collins this weekend so i have been hitting craigslist hard for a larger fish tank or nice, exotic fish, well i found a lady that is selling everything she has and told me she would sell me her 10-12" spotted gar for 50$? is this a good deal, she said he is stable, and very calm. i really want this gar, but as i am not sure on its value, i am asking you guys/gals.

thanks for any input, if its a good deal, i will get the fish, if not i might look for another one.

thank you for the fast response. and is that a really good deal? i don't want to go window shopping and have this deal be thrown out the window if it is indeed a deal i must jump on.

sorry for the double post.

It's pretty good.. Not a screaming deal.. My lfs by me sells 10-12 for $40

I would have a look at the gar and see if you really like it or not. Then offer her $40.00, if she won't take it then its up to you. 10 bucks is 10 bucks.

yea, well here is another Deal, or no Deal things i just found, an 18 inch longnose or spotted gar for 80$ but i offered my H. Scomb. as a trade, is that a decent trade? and around here you don't find gars unless you order them, so i think i might snag the 50$ gar if i could get a deal with the gar and a red tailed baracuda from her.

still looking for the gar tho. ill post any deals i find in this thread.

There is a good chance her spotted is a florida, meaning that price is about average. 80 for a longnose seems a bit high.

both prices are high IMO...the "spotted" is very likely a Florida gar, and that price is therefore slightly above average ($35-40 is more reasonable for that species and size). the longnose prices is also very high...$80 is getting close to the rarer species of gars, and a big longnose isn't necessarily worth more because it's bigger.

if you can negotiate a better deal, go for it...if not, then i would go for the smaller cheaper gar instead--

well after closer examination, the 80$ gar is an 18" gator gar in a 75 gallon. i figured i could safe him, and grow him out a bit till i got a pond up and running (hopefully soon, i might be picking up a 225 gallon tank while im down there as well) as the the spotted/florida, i may pass on it as if i could trade for the gar, then i would have traded a family favorite, and would really not like to push my limits. but i have the green light, im just waiting for them.
