Death by rocks???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sorry for your lost, thats really a strange occurence, your bichir might got choke when finding food, thats why i prefer using sand to avoid such incidents

love the autopsy cypher, i use fine sand and big rocks for gravel so as not to be able to be swallowed.

Whats wierd I put one in the freezer till I worked up the nerve to disect it-Anne

i had my 4" albino senegal choke on a shrimp pellet so yes it is possible for a fish to choke. i found him floating and the pellet had expanded and was coming from out his gills. it was so sad bc i really like the little bugger but i learned to only feed them soft foods or soak the pellets first.

i have had it happen and so has my dad he had a 12" JD the fish had bed diging in the gavel for days lol im sorry for your loss. i have to get gavel out of my BP and live food all the time he is ok for now im going to live soon so i hope he dont choke.:lock::Pikachu::turtle:

Maybe I'm looking at it a bit too simply but...

All living things need to breathe. Even plants. It's true bichirs have advanced lung systems, but think about it. When a poly is resting @ the bottom of the tank, it's mouth consistantly opens and closes. It's taking in air each time, and a mouth full of rocks would clearly prevent that. Yea, they also go to the surface to breathe about every half hour, but they wouldn't be breathing on the bottom if it wasn't necessary for survival.

Most definitely sorry for your loss. Good luck with your next fish when you get to call Toyin. :)

how did that go?

I keep my sengal with gravel:nilly:. Ive seen him spit out pieces of gravel while eating. lets hope he dosen't suffer the same fate. Sorry about your fish though.

my 9 inch ornate died by trying to eat my female brichardi.
both fish died. he died by suffocation and she died trying to protect her fry. the brichardi was a big girl too and very fast never though she'd end up in the mouth of my ornate. papa brichardi was too big for him to eat. it's weird i would have though my 18 inch arowana woulda tried to eat a brichardi first but he doesn't mind them.

i have since relocated the brichardi colony to a 29 gallon species tank..
and pick up a new bicher,. lapredei.
