Debris distribution in the water column

Is there a prime location to put the pump to suck debris from the water column ? (upper, middle, bottom ) Are the debris in the aquarium, the ones that are floating around equally distributed in the whole tank ?

What type of pump is it ?

Personally I would probably place in the center and place up if you have a sand substrate.

Or alternately put intake on a corner and place a few wide flow power-heads on the opposite side of the tank pushing debris TO IT, which is how I and many others have my our canister filters/and other types set up.
