Just wondering how evryone handles water treatment. The guy at my LFS said "just squirt some in" and the policy has worked for me so far. Are there problems with adding excess dechlorinator? Any dangers associated with the stuff?

every time i do a water change i use a dose for the entire tank and have never had problems

Here in Australia I do 30% water changes and have done for a long time on a weekly basis.Fortunately my tap water is around 23 degrees celcius so when mixed with the tank water only brings it down to 25 usually runnig a stable 26.Somedays my water temp will hit 28 degrees due to very hot days here in Qld.I use Prime by Seachem as it only needs 5 ml per 200 L.I pour it straight in the tank and don't prepare the water 24 hrs in advance like other members do,however I put enough dechlorinator in for the whole tank volume and not just the water being replaced.I have never had any problems in any of my tanks other than a case of ich from a newly introduced fish. Now I have a quarrantine tank and have never had ich in any other tank since.

Also make sure your product also removes Chloramines which is put in the water to preserve chlorine.

i add 5 drops to a bucket before i put it back into the tank. thus letting it sit for a few sec befor dumping

i dont think you should worry too much. Just as long as your not pouring insane amounts, be sensible

I stay sensible and my fish are fine so it's no big worry. I picked up a new brand that supposedly has herbal calming agents and gets rid of every bit of nastiness which is what got me thinking about this. Are there better brands? Different procedures with said brands? The way I figure people either dump the stuff straight in or mix it before hand but I haven't heard any press on the effect either way. I'm wondering if the stuff is grossly benign rendering most conversation irrelevant.

I just use enough dechlorinizer for the added water. I don't use any for small 10% WC that I do frenquently ;)

I have found a source of not so readily see information, usually cover by the thumb and/or forfingers...the instructions on the side of the packaging.

As much as some aquarist want to be alchemists, there's not the need there was 60 years ago. The information and the products are out there thanks to those who came before.

Just follow the directions (so you don't hurt the manufacturer's feelings :D ) and you have someone to blame if all goes wrong.

As for the "it hasn't hurt my fish" have you checked for gill burn/hole-in-the-head/line erosion under a microscope?

Experts got there title for a reason so listen ...and never be afraid to ask 'why'.
