Here is the craigslist ad that this post is about:

I have a 55 gallon Fish tank with stand, (3) Fish, filter, heater, and everything you need with the exception of water. The fish are 1 algea eater around 17inch long and 2 oscar fish.. Which retail over 75.00 in fish One oscar is 18inch long and the other is 3inches. Take everything for 75.00

I am tempted to go get this setup, but I have no way of purchasing a tank anywhere close to large enough for the oscars or pleco. All I could really guarantee is they get a water change every other day. I don't really know any good LFS around here that would want an oscar or pleco that big to trade in. I want the 55 gal setup though and have the money available to do so. In this situation what would you guys do? Go ahead and get the setup knowing you can at least care for the fish better than their current owner and look around to trade them in? Or stay out of it. There's a picture on their add and the big oscar isn't anywhere close to 18" i don't think but he's a solid foot long at least.

i would get them and get them a bigger tank... poor oscars....

yeah... if i did get it i'd start searching for LFS that can supply them with a big enough tank and probably just give them to the store for free, I can't afford a big enough tank nor do i have anywhere to put one, but if i had the guess they probably are getting like a monthly water change i can at least fix that part of their life

Hm, thats a tough one. Id get it and try to figure something out. At least theyd be better off with you. Although it is very hard to find anywhere that would take an Oscar that size.

yeah.. i emailed them asking what kind of filter they run on it and how old the tank was or if it had ever been resealed recently, we'll see if i get a response

I am pretty much in your boat, I would love a new tank but do not want any inhabitants that may come with that tank....I would take the fish and tank, check around if any LFS will give you a credit for the fish. If not, if they will take them for free. I would also post an ad on Craigslist trying to get rid of the fish. I have been somewhat successful with getting rid of unwanted fish on Craigslist.

get it poor fish even if they dont get an upgrade they will be better looked after how did that oscar even get that big in that tank???

I too am calling shennanigans on a 18" Oscar in a 55. I am guessing the author of the ad meant 8"
