Hey guys,
I built myself a DIY stand similar to the one given on garf.org. It's made out of cheap, untreated pine. It seems really sturdy, but I was wondering about water splashing around in the sump and what not. Do you think I should put some water resistant deck sealant on it, or it that a waste of time?

I wouldn't use an unsealed stand even on a ultility type breeder rack. Three coats of spar varnish is best but you can substitute a clear acrilic if you have access to a spray gun.

I think polyurethane would be the easiest. You put three coats on, with a few hours in between coats (it'll say exactly how long on the can). You can put this on with those disposable foam brushes. If you want a little color to your stand, they make a polyurethane that has stain in it. Three coats of that and your stand will look great.
