I decided I wanted to see my pike more so I removed everything (except the substrate and filters of course) from my pike's tank. Was this a good move? I just couldn't stand having to sit 2 metres away from the tank just for him to come out of his cave.
Depends on the presonality of you pike. I personally keep decor to a minimum but
not bare. I keep some rockwork and a couple of pieces of driftwood. But mine all
come out and swim most of the time anyways.
Yours should start getting more comfortable as he grows. Is he alone? If so this also
may make him a little timid. Try some type of dithers to maybe make him
more comfortable, if he sees them out swimming then he will more than likely come out more.
I have to agree. But since I want him as a display fish and he wasn't coming out as much as I would like when he had decor, I figured I might as well keep the tank bare and see how he does. Maybe if he's still not comfortable in a week I'll put the wood back.

Yeah he's alone at the moment. I was thinking about dithers but I think there's a pretty big chance he would kill them.
Not necessarily, I keep SDs and other types of cichlids (Vieja/Partheraps)
with all my pikes. I have no problems with the pikes trying to kill them.
My marms chase the SDs once in a while and my lents don't even pay
attention to them. If you do it just get some that are larger. Your one
problem is you feed live feeders thus he will tend to see other small fish
as food. Where as mine have never had a feeder since imported.

Yeah alright maybe I'll try it out with some largish fish that use the upper water column. I've stopped giving him feeders actually. And a minute ago I was watching him and he was swimming around the front glass so I think he's fine with the lack of hiding places. Just gave him a cube of bloodworms as well and as I type this he's eating with his usual vigour. Great. He still has a few white nodules from his Lymphocystis infection though.
I only use minimal amounts driftwood in all my tanks, along w/ some sand. I don't go completely bare as I like them to have somewhere to hide if they feel the need to. I also got tired of cleaning the algae off fake plants and the "crap" that gets caught under rocks.
ive tried removing decor to get my pikes to come out and they always end up stressed out in a bottom corner. ive had lots of success with dithers, mainly sd's and tinfoils as well as some other less aggressive cichlids which turned my cr. lacustris from always in his cave to out swimming around alot. dithers have made my pikes alot more active so id definitely suggest it also
