decorative/cool return idea

Has anyone heard of or tried doing a return from the sump through a waterfall or a small pond with a spillway (12" wide roughly) placed above the aquarium. The reason im asking is to give my aquarium a more decorative look and make it more unique then a general aquarium. Im trying it on a 55gallon tank at first
