OK, another random question...do any of you notice any stress/decreased appetite when your rays are shedding or regrowing their barbs? I ask because mine either lost hers during shipment or it was removed by the breeder (I never knew exactly what happened to it), but it never seemed to bother her or affect her health over the few months I've had her. But just now, I happened to be looking at her really closely, and she has a new barb growing out! It's about 2" out so far. I'm just curious if this could have contributed to her lack of appetite or not?

Dont think it does.... Both my retic and Motoro shed their first barb last week.

Not a single sign of loss of appetite before , during and after.

sorry for the late response pinklady but i think that does happen, or at least with some rays, one of my motoro's is starting to shed its barb and the only reason why i realized this was because he hasnt been eating normally for the last few days. he also doesnt move as much during the process which i found a little strange.

I don't think so either. Never have noticed any changes with my rays.

Make sure you test the nitrate with an in date or new test kit, raised levels have been reported to decrease feeding, this is true of many fish.

Also check the usual ph, nitrite and ammonia. Double check the temp too as heaters and /or thermometers can go wrong.

I cannot stress enough the need to use fresh test kits, I have been comparing new with old recently and my older kits which are just about at the end of their use by are reading much lower....I got one of my 5-6 yr old marine kits out and the nitrate did not even register but it was above 20ppm on a new kit.

ahhh man, now you guys are scaring me, now i gotta go check everything haha. well thanks for the heads up, especially with the importance of the freshness of a test kit!

good call guys! im very impressed with the knowledge of the peps on this site! nitrite and amonia are fine, for some reason the temp was pretty low for some reason! thats probably the problem! thanks everyone!
