any one out there use deep sand filtration to convert nitrates into nitrogen gas with so called dead spots in (the fresh water tanks), but i heard in the marine aquarium the "dead spots" house anerobic bacteria that convert the nitrates into nitrogan gas. the easiest way is to use an old under graval filter and cover it with a hole lot of fine sand ect to create the dead spot. i have a brachish GSP set up and am reaserching the bast way to house him in his future marine enviroment. my thought was to use an oln filter and cover it in first agroget and than fine sand on top and live rock ect. there is a lot of info out there, i want to here it from the horses mouth.

Thas can turn deadly in fresh water real fast.

I'm trying one in my sump but it's only been running for 5 weeks. They will only cause problems if the sand is stirred up, so it's not a good idea to do one in the tank unless you have fish that don't dig.

Here's a recent artical on it. I'm using MTS in mine.
