That is what makes the Malawi cichlids so interesting. I have a Pseudotropheus polit and it changes from a rather dull pale blue blotchy colouring to the face and belly being a very dark blue/black colour and the rest of the body being a silvery white. Have them in my pet shop and people are absolutely amazed by the change that takes place and how quickly it happens.

My Red Top Zebra does the same thing. He's really dark most of the time and then BAM, all striped and the bright yellow fin on top...
