I have a 90 gal tiger oscar tank and was wondering if i could use a set of massive deer antlers that were just obtained this year.i have a piece of driftwood soaking to realese the tannins but keep thinking how cool the antlers would look in the tank. The only reason im sceptical is that i have a pleco and know wrasping on the driftwood would be benificial. I belive antlers are mostly calcium but not 100% sure. Just wana see if it would hurt my water peramiters in any way, and as a hunter would love to have them in my tank.

I would soak them in a tub of water for a month and see how funky the water gets. I know there is a lot of keratin in them, which could break down in your water. An old, weathered rack would probably be safe, but may raise your pH.

is it this years kill or a old shed you found? if its fresher i would worry about rot. like you said they are mostly calcium so they will dissolve in time alot of what i read on putting bone or skulls in the tank suggest you coat them with a clear epoxie

I had a friend do this with a bunch of native fish in 30g. He actually put the skull with maybe a 7-8 point antlers in there. It looked great, but he said it had been outside for a couple years. I suggested against it and since then the tank looks a little bit better. I just figured there would be too many things that could mess with water chemistry for it to be a good idea.

i had a small pair in a 55 for about 6 months and they were ok
