Defective Jewel Parents?

I have a pair of Jewels that have spawned 3 times over the last 6 weeks. Each time the eggs sat for about 2 days then they ate them. There are no other fish in the 40g tank and they don't seem to get spooked at all.

I got them pretty much to breed feeders for my preds and so far they're not living up to their end of the deal. Pretty soon I'm going to have to get another set . Anyone have any clue what's the deal?

I'm wondering if the male isn't fertilizing them so the female ends up eating the unfertilized eggs. If it happens again I'm going to take the eggs out and see if they hatch.

try taking out half of them and stick em in to some floating container. see if they hatch.

i ended up with ONE jewel fry that way, then the male died. I take it as some big cosmic joke on me.
