A while back I bought 2 juvenile jags from a LFS. however as they have grown to about 8" I am seeing considerable differences in these fish, one is obviously a jag but the other is much stockier the coloration goes from a violet sheen on top down to a blue green then yellow along the bottom has speckles throughout and black spots along the lateral line with red eyes, no nuchal hump apparent as of yet. This fish is HIGHLY aggressive and is dominating the tank. It is obviously some sort of guapote, thinking it may be Dovii but not sure as not every dovii Ive seen looks exactly the same. Is there a characteristic of all doviis that may help me identify this fish? Sorry I cant post a pic as of yet but any help in identifying this fish would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks

yes the fish does somewhat sound like a dovii, but we really need pics of the fish, the sheen you are describing is more common and prominante with dovii than jaguars.

From what I hear, it doesn't sound like a dovii. The yellow coloration, the speckling, AND the stockiness - I'd say that sounds like a Freddy or a Loiselli. A motaguense would be a third pick.
Do google searches to see photos of each.

It could even be an exceptional female Jag - stocky, yellowish, speckles...
