Deforestation

Can you type some of the questions you want us to answer? Deforestation is a bit broad.

I just got back from my annual camping trip in the Sierra Nevadas. I used to get really mad when I'd come across clear cut mountains but, since I can actually see the new trees they've planted when they cut, are about 5-7 ft. tall now. I think this forest management thing may be able to work.

at least in the US, trees are grown as crops, for lumber and paper.

"save the trees" makes about as much sense as "save the corn". Once harvested, the plant in question is replanted, for a future harvest.

they might be farmers, but they're not stupid. they rely on the crops for their family's (or corporation's) long term livelihood.

now, mass deforestation in the amazon may be another story. I don't know enough about that to comment, though. But I will say Brazilians aren't stupid, either. I kinda doubt they are mismanaging their rain forest the way environmentalists try to convince you they are.

All of the above is correct.

The problem is that monoculture tree farms (like cornfields) offer little to native wildlife. Here in Oregon (and in much of the U.S.) the problem is not outright deforestation but a loss of diversity in our "forests".

Its good when done correctly =] pretty much agree with the aboves.
