I saw this catfish at the petshop the other day. I want to to buy but just wanted to get some opinions on a few thing.

1) What is it? I think a Lima Shovelnose, just want to see what others think.

2) What happened to the nose? My guess is it was in a tank to small. There we sa beat up peacock and retail in the same tank both about a foot long.

3) Do you notice a curve at the bottom of the spine?

4) I know it will always be deformed but will it have a decent lifespan?

It's a Lima shovel nose. The nose is broken witch is common when shovel nose cats get spooked and bang into the glass.

Its a LSN. Looks like he did a full speed stop into the side of the tank. Poor guy.

*** It's a Sorubim. Most likely either elongatus or lima.

*** As the guys say above.

3) Do you notice a curve at the bottom of the spine?
***Hard to say but maybe. The body shape looks off. Perhaps all the consequences of the same accident.

***Hard to say. Your guess is as good as any. If its feeding very well, I don't see why not but I am no fish surgeon/internalist.

I ended up buying him and he is doing awesome. He is pretty active and eats everything. He hangs out with my 4 line catfish. I think he might also be blind, he has a purple tint to his eye. You can kind of see it in the picture. In the petshop and my tank for the first couple of days he had a slime coat coming off. Now his skin looks perfect.

He is even more deformed now then he was in that picture. When the guy at the petshop netted him his fin got stuck in the net. We ended up cutting the net and some of it is still stuck on his fin. I will get some updated pictures.

That happened to my ID shark when I was transferring him one time. I couldn't get it off either so I had to cut the net and for about a week he swam around with a little piece of net on his fin. It eventually fell of though. Poor fish, but it sounds like he found a good home.
