I seem to have some problems with humidity in my fish room. Do I need a dehumidifier? I have 4 55 gallon tanks, 1 75 gallon, and a few 20 gallon tanks in a spare bedroom. Do you think I need a dehumidifier for 300+ gallons of water in a fish room? I noticed a bunch of mold and moisture on my windows, so I was just curious.

I would think that you need a dehumidifier if there is a bunch of mold and moisture on the windows. How enclosed is the room? Is there a lot of ventilation? I would see if you could get a little more airflow going through the room and if that doesn't work I would go the dehumidifier route for sure. Hope I helped ya out a little bit. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

If your getting mold on your windows then I would say yes. Knowing the room size would help too. What are the walls made of? Is it green board, dry wall, or cement?

It is a regular wall. No greenboard. I keep the room closed off, so that it raises the temperature in that room. The room is about 5 degrees higher than other rooms in my house. I have the vents to the central air closed as well. Main reason for this is to keep the temperature high.

A couple of fans would help considerably.

Also, are your tanks covered? If not that will also help...

I try to make a more conscious effort to cover the tanks. I still have some moisture though.

I am dealing with this issue in my fishroom. The humidity was around 70% before I did something about it. I didn't have covers on my tanks so the walls LITERALLY started bubbling.

To fix it, I installed two "fart fans," what you typically see in bathrooms. I also put a vent in to allow the moisture to escape. Now, it is hold at around 38%.

My wife and budget wont allow me to install fans, so I will purchase a dehumidifier to see what happens. I noticed my wallpaper bubbled in one spot as well.

Use a through the wall fan. Or a bathroom fan vented through the roof or the eve of your home. Also you can hook one up and ventilate it under the house then easily through a foundation vent using a 4" through the wall cap available at home depot or lowes. This uses far less electricity.

They work but:

I run a dehumidifier 24/7 plumbed to my basement sump pump-out tank. Moisture is very low with a single unit sucking off of over 1,600gal. Another thing to consider is the fact that dehumidifier will HEAT your fishroom. I ran 2 for a while in the summer and my basement was toasty, but with drier air in the winter here only 1 is needed for the next few months. The fart fan vented to the outside is the next thing I am doing. I know in alot of states they are code in bathrooms not for odor removal, but rather moisture from hot water. They also make dehumidifier/airconditioners, pricey but nice. Friend has one since his tanks are in a bedroom like yours, and attached to living space. If your growing funk on your windows and the wall paper is bubblin you need to do sumthin fast. Mold don't play, ask NOLA.
