just started a nano reef and was wondering if i can use DI water to top-off the evaporated water from the tank? i work in a lab and we have DI water. just see if i can use that instead of buying RO water. i buy already mixed water from my lfs so this is not for water changes. thanks

Since RO is used for the production of DI water I would assume you would be good to go with that one ;)

Just make sure nothing from the lab contaminates the water.

*Actually I should amend my statement. If your lab uses the same techniques ours does to generate DI water, then it involves an RO step*
Give it a test for organics and that should give you your answer.

are you talking about micro-organism? we test for that every month. also we dont use copper in any of our water, all pcv pipes. i work in a blood bank lab and use DI to make reagents and buffers.

Yeah I was talking about organic molecules that don't carry a charge or bacteria, but it sounds like your lab is up on that so you are golden. As long as no one minds you taking some water for your tanks I'd say you are safe to go.

Short answer, yes. I'm pretty sure that the standard of any bio-related industry (blood bank in your case) is top notch.
So I'm pretty sure the DI water there should be pure H2O and nothing more.

Do get your boss/supervisor's approval first though.
